The Legendary Tenugui Japanese Whale Cotton Tea Towel (手拭?) is very pleasant to the touch. It allows you to wipe your hands, and mop your forehead, as a headband or simply as a decoration. It usually measures 35 × 90 cm and is white, sometimes adorned with the “name” of the family, or printed with various patterns, including traditional ones.
Ours are adorned with famous prints by the Japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi, the great master of the 19th-century woodblock print, along with Katsushika Hokusai, best known for his wave and his Mount Fuji.
His works are steeped in Japanese folklore: tales, legends and myths come together to form frightening, intriguing or very humorous frescoes! Here, we find Musashi, one of Japan’s most emblematic figures as well as an outstanding fencer, on the back of a whale.
It is an unusual, functional and very original gift for any lover of Japanese culture or unusual fashion!
