Nodding Renealmia from the Temple of Flora

Nodding Renealmia – The striking composition shows the plant partially cropped in dramatic closeup, more typical of photography — which had not been invented yet — than typical natural history prints of the era. The compositional device allows the artist to show a few tiny droplets of what Thornton refers to in his text as the “honey” produced by the plant, falling midair. In the distance is a mountainous tropical landscape with a palm tree.
